THE LANGLEY SCHOOLS MUSIC PROJECT

In 1976, Hans Fenger - a poor rock musician from Vancouver - convinced the Langley School board to hire him as a music teacher. Not knowing any theory, he taught the kids what he knew - the popular rock songs of the day. On two occasions he had the foresight to commit to tape the results which resulted in two vinyl pressings that went into the hands of the musicians and singers. The children's choir were accompanied by a bass, drums (actually, a bass drum and cymbals), an electric National Steel laptop guitar, xylophones, metallophones and an acoustic guitar (the only instrument Berger played). Words are not enough to describe the end result. There is sense of innocence and earnestness in the children's performances that transform the classic standards into something all their own. Suffice to say you will never listen to "Space Oddity" or "Desparado" the same way again. File this one under "precursor to Kids From Widney High".
